Home Safety Tips

Stairways, Halls and Floors

Have secure handrails on both sides of the stairs and use them when going up or down.  If you must carry something, hold it in one hand and use the handrail with the other.  Don't let the object you are carrying block your view of the steps.

Have good lighting with light switches at the top and bottom of stairs and on each end of a long hall.  You can even get switches that are lit.

Keep a clear path! Don't leave objects or clothing on the floor.  Keep cords and wires close to the wall so you don't trip over them.

Remove throw rugs or use non-slip backing so rugs won't slide.

Bathroom

Mount grab bars near toilet and on inside and outside of tub or shower.

Place non-skid mats on all surfaces that may get wet.

Bedroom

Place a lamp on each side of your bed, where it is easy to reach.

Keep your telephone near your bed.

Use a night light so your path to the bathroom is illuminated.  You can buy one that goes on by itself after dark.

Kitchen

Keep items you use most often within easy reach.

Don't stand on a chair to reach something that's too high.

If you must use a step stool, be sure it is steady and has a handrail on top.

Choose a cook-top with front controls.

Miscellaneous

Keep emergency numbers in large print near each telephone.

Don't let your cat or dog trip you.  Know where your pet is whenever you are standing or walking.

• Remove things you could trip over.

• Make sure your home has lots of light
by adding more or brighter light bulbs.
